Mullein leaf (Verbascum Thapsus) has traditionally been used to treat all things respiratory: coughs and colds, bronchitis, asthma, and COPD. Mullein contains flavonoid compounds and quercetin that lower inflammation in the body. Mullein soothes sore throats by coating in a mucilage and eases spasmodic coughs.

As an expectorant, mullein thins and helps the body to express mucous. Mullein is cooling and drying within, often being used to clear excess heat from the body. The astringent qualities of mullein pull stagnation and tone smooth muscles of the upper respiratory tract.
